THE SWEETENED PEARLS
THE SWEETENED PEARLS
An important part of any festival is the fact that you get to do things together, with your friends and family. Staying away from family for further studies or job, takes away all the charm and happiness of celebrating Indian festivals.
For the most widely celebrated Indian festivals we have one of the finest sweets to offer and to cherish. Any guesses??????
Barfi??? No. Rasgulla??? No. Any other guess??
Okay, let me help you. It's the most loved mithai - "BOONDI Ke LADOO".
This Indian sweet gets its name from the Hindi word "boond" meaning droplets or "moti" meaning pearls. While, Laddu or ladoo or avinsh is a sphere-shaped sweet originating from the Indian subcontinent; the name originated from the Sanskrit word Lattika.
Boondi ladoos are made from fine gram-flour (besan) droplets which are fried and then immersed in a thick & delicious saffron flavoured sugar syrup, and finally rolled into the shape of Ladoos. It looks like a lot of work, but when you put one in your mouth, you'll know its totally worth it!
For all the healthy eaters out there, who prioritize their health over anything, you must also know the benefits of eating ladoos.
The main ingredient i.e. besan used for making ladoos has some health benefits as well. Besan is a highly nutritious ingredient which has plenty of health benefits. It has a good amount of protein content which can be helpful in contributing to the protein requirements of vegetarians. Besan is a favourite ingredient for Indian homemade healthy snacks and sweets. Besan has lesser calories than whole wheat flour. It is nutritionally dense and hence it promotes weight loss as it contains lower levels of fat as compared to their non-vegetarian protein counterparts. It has high amount of minerals such as iron, potassium, manganese, copper, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium as well as vitamin B-6 and thiamine. Besan contains healthy unsaturated fats which help to lower the cholesterol level. Due to its low glycemic index, Laddus made from Besan is safe for diabetics. It also has high amount of soluble fiber and folates. Besan is gluten-free food and hence it is a great substitute for wheat and other gluten containing grains.
Do you know an awestruck fact about a ladoo??
The largest individual ladoo weighs 29,465 kilograms (64,959 lb) and was achieved by PVVS Mallikharjuna Rao (India), in Tapeswaram, Andhra Pradesh, India, on 6 September 2016. The ladoo was made to a traditional Boondi recipe. The ingredients included ghee, refined oil, cashew nuts, sugar, almonds, cardamom, and water.
Isn't that huge?? I wonder what strength it would have required to actually make it. And are you also thinking the same as me?? Like who actually ate it?? Well, even I didn't got to know. That must be a secret.
Let us all let it remain a secret and enjoy the delightful Ladoos from Kanpur's most famous Banarasi Misthan Bhandar, who are taking all the safety measures in preparing our favourite sweets at their end. Don't wait for any specific reason to relish those Boondi ladoos. Grab your hands on them.
